Angels acquire Zack Greinke.

Deal is done: Greinke to #Angels, sources tell me and @jonmorosi. @Ken_Rosenthal

#Brewers getting shortstop Jean Segura and two Double A pitchers from #Angels for Greinke. “Finishing touches” being applied. Deal is done. @Ken_Rosenthal

If the Angels weren’t already one of the favorites to win it all, they are now. In a playoffs series they will be throwing Jered Weaver, Zack Greinke, Dan Haren, and C.J. Wilson. Not to mention that lineup. I’m very interested to see what they can trade Peter Bourjos for. He has enough value to fill any more holes (like a very good reliever) that they might have.

2013 Free Agency Could Be Better Focus for Boston Red Sox and not Trade Deadline

codyross_0

The July 31 trade deadline is just five days away and as the Boston Red Sox are in a critical part of their season, major decisions loom. Though the team remains within striking distance for a playoff berth, the team might be better suited to stay content this season and make a big splash during the winter in free agency.

The team has been linked to several highly coveted pitchers over the past weeks, but has not been close to making a major deal. The organization has said that they are not interested in making a deal for a player who will not be under contract next season. The trade market for players, especially pitchers whose contracts extend past this year, is limited which means a team will likely give up too much to acquire their services.

The Red Sox have highly regarded prospects in their farm system and any potential deal the team makes will involve one or more of those players. With the quality of the players who are on the trade market, compared to the free agents available in the offseason, the better long-term move seems to be staying content with the current roster. Though it will be tempting to pull the trigger on a deal that would acquire a roster boost for a playoff push this season, the best big picture move could be the one that is not made.

Though the Philadelphia Phillies took the biggest potential free agent off the market by signing pitcher Cole Hamels to an extension, there are other high quality players available. The Red Sox will have money opening up as the contract of Daisuke Matsuzaka runs out along with several other small contracts. There are current players the team will likely resign (David Ortiz and Jacoby Ellsbury), but they will need to make their biggest move to bolster their starting pitching.

The best pitcher that will likely be available is Zack Greinke (seen below) , who many teams will be looking to sign. The Red Sox have a reason to feel optimistic because new general manager Ben Cherington will be looking to make his first major acquisition for the team. Dan Haren is a potential free agent, should the Los Angeles Angels not pick up his option for 2013. Also, Hiroki Kuroda is expected to be a free agent following is one-year contract with the New York Yankees. These are just some of the starting pitchers that could greatly help the Red Sox rotation in 2013.

Another decision for the Red Sox will involve outfielder Cody Ross. The team got Ross for a low price last winter and has been paying huge dividends for the team this season. Ross seems to be a player made for Fenway Park and who has a desire to stay with the team. The Red Sox will be smart to bring him back, unless another team offers the slugger a ridiculous contract.

After taking care of the bigger holes, the team can fill its smaller holes such as bullpen help. When closer Andrew Bailey returns from the disabled list, the Red Sox will get a better sense if he could be the long-term solution to ending games for the team. If the team enters the market for a closer, Brandon League of the Seattle Mariners could be the target.

Unless the Red Sox show the potential to make a major run at the playoffs this season, it is likely they could stay put at the trade deadline. The team has showed signs of life several times throughout the season but quickly falls apart. A major step forward would be a sweep of the Yankees this weekend.
