All-Timer

With his two-run single in the top of the eighth inning tonight against the Nationals, Chipper Jones vaulted into the lead for career RBI by a player whose primary position is third base. Chipper now with 1598 career RBI, pushed past Hall of Famers George Brett (1596) and Mike Schmidt (1595). Jones though actually trails Schmidt in second place for most RBI when actually playing third base (Schmidt – 1419, Chipper – 1316). Schmidt also played 157 games at first base while Chipper played 357 in left field.

Chipper also trails Alex Rodriguez, who currently has 1934 career RBI. However, A-Rod has played 1272 games at shortstop versus 1142 at third base. Rodriguez’s contract does not expire until after the 2017 season. As long as he remains healthy enough to play third he should eventually pass Chipper on this list. If A-Rod’s health forces him to shift to DH full-time though, the next third basemen with the best chance to catch Chipper Jones is 33-year old Adrián Beltré, who has 1172 RBI and is signed with the Rangers through the 2016 season.

Chipper now ranks 33rd, one behind Nap Lajoie, on the all-time career RBI list. With seventy games remaining on the schedule, Jones has a realistic chance to catch Goose Goslin (1609), Harold Baines (1628) and Ernie Banks (1636) to move up to the 29th position. It would take a run of health and production closer to his prime though to catch Tony Perez (1652), Sammy Sosa (1667) or Gary Sheffield (1676).

Does anyone still really believe that Chipper should not be elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame in five years?
